Riding Waves, Chasing Dreams

Charlotte Mulley on Life, Surfing, and Limitless Adventure

From her very first surf lesson at Greenmount, Cooly, Charlotte knew the ocean would shape her future. What started as a childhood passion has grown into a lifestyle and career, taking her across the globe to compete against the best surfers in the world. With recent highlights including a fourth-place finish at the European Championships and representing England at the ISA World Open Games in El Salvador, Charlotte is carving out a path defined by dedication, adrenaline, and a deep love for the ocean. We sat down with her to talk about her journey so far, her proudest moments, and her big goals for the future.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first got into surfing / shortboarding?

I started surfing when I was 10 years old after booking into a surf school at Greenmount, Cooly. From my very first lesson I was hooked — the feeling of standing on a board and being pushed along by a wave was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. From that moment, I never looked back. I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, and surfing gave me a way to connect with it on a deeper level. What started as a fun day out quickly grew into a passion that’s now such a huge part of my life and who I am.

What do you love most about your sport and why?

What I love most is that surfing is so much more than just a sport — it’s a lifestyle. It shapes the way you live, the places you go, and even the people you meet. Through surfing, I’ve been lucky enough to travel, connect with incredible communities, and experience different cultures, all while being in environments that revolve around the ocean. There’s something very grounding about being in the water, and the friendships you make along the way are just as special as the surfing itself.

Tell us about your achievements in the sport so far.

This year has definitely been one of my best so far. I placed fourth at the European Championships, which was such a proud moment for me and a real sign that all the hard work is paying off. I also placed 21st at the ISA World Open Games in El Salvador, competing against some of the best surfers from around the world. Both experiences have been massive learning curves, giving me confidence as I continue to push myself further.

“Representing England at the European Championships and celebrating with my team after a close heat was one of the best moments of my career.”

Looking back, what’s been your proudest moment or greatest achievement to date?

Without a doubt, it was representing England at the European Championships. I’ll never forget coming in from one of my heats, knowing it was really close, and then hearing I’d made it through. The adrenaline was unreal, and when the whole team came running down the beach to celebrate with me, it was honestly one of the best feelings ever. Moments like that remind me exactly why I love competing and why I push myself every day.

What are your current goals or what do you hope to achieve in the future?

Right now, my short-term goal is to win a QS event, which I know will be a big stepping stone in my career. Looking further ahead, my dream is to qualify for the Olympics and compete on the Challenger Series. Those are the goals that keep me motivated every day, whether I’m training in the gym, working on technique in the water, or traveling for competitions.
